ECI 526: Theory and Research on Teaching and Learning
Social Studies
Engage students with activities that require historical thinking and authentic intellectual work.
In Dr. Manfra’s class I was introduced to the idea of historical thinking. Historical thinking refers to teaching methods that move away from the students consuming the conclusions of others and instead produce knowledge and meaning for themselves to construct their own understanding of history. One way to promote historical thinking in the classroom is through the use of primary sources. Teachers can also utilize decision making and discussion as a way to promote historical thinking. These types of activities foster active learning and keep students engaged and constantly thinking about social studies.
I also did some work investigating the curriculum standards and their connection to authentic intellectual work. When students are engaged in authentic intellectual work they are required to use higher-order thinking, delve deeply into their knowledge, find meaning with the material beyond the classroom, have substantive conversation, and meet high expectations. While in the class, I also completed a literature review focused on how to teach social studies in a way that supports how students learn. I combined the various social studies theories with psychology theories on how the brain works to store memories. This research is what inspired me to become more aware of my students’ learning and engagement with social studies.
