Use the TPACK framework to create lessons that engage students with new literacy and media tools.
New Literacies & Media taught me how to more comfortably and effectively incorporate technology in my classroom in order to engage students in the learning of social studies. The TPACK framework allows educators to teach students using technology that will engage and immerse students in content. I learned how to use web 2.0 tools such as:
-Kidblog -Xtranormal -Voki
-Toondoo -Prezi -Weebly -Photostory
-Animoto -Glogster -Voicethread -Windows Movie Maker

During the class I put my TPACK skills to the test and completed a project based inquiry project with Melanie Spransy, in which we sought to discover how we could use primary source material from the American Revolution to connect students with the past through the use of Kidblog and DocsTeach. The lesson we created had students using technology and digital resources to create meaning from their learning, which helped them to be more engaged in learning about the American Revolution. Students were introduced to the American Revolution by sequencing a set of digital resources on DocsTeach. Students then read letters from the Revolutionary time period and reflected about the content of their letters and the war on Kidblog. Learning was made relevant through this activity because students were using 21st Century skills. The blogging assignment provided an effective and new way for students to collaborate and many students commented on a classmate’s blog who they rarely interact with normally. Many students enjoyed expressing themselves through blogging and role playing with primary sources. I had never seen my students connect with material from the American Revolutionary War with the enthusiasm they had during the blogging activities.

Since the class ended, I have been trying to incorporate more technology in order to engage my students. I decided to have students pose a historical question related to the American Civil War and pick a web 2.0 tool to use to present their findings.
